Hattye Knight was born and raised in the Bronx and is a graduate of the esteemed Bronx High School of Science. She attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and after her junior year of college, Ms. Knight joined the U.S. Navy as an Air Traffic Controller. She quickly rose in rank and served as an Air Traffic Control Tower Supervisor at Roosevelt Roads (Roosey) Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, Ms. Knight suffered a career ending injury and after serving 5 years was discharged while stationed in Norfolk, VA. Ms. Knight’s sense of adventure and her willingness to learn new things, allowed her to work in various positions. Ms. Knight was a meter reader, an insurance specialist, an assistant to a General Manager of a large military entertainment facility, a substitute teacher, a mentor to Boys and Girls club students, and a rater of standardized tests offered through Educational Testing Service (ETS). She worked for several fortune 500 companies including USAA, T. Rowe Price, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
During the evenings she attended courses at Saint Leo University and completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Resources in 1996. She attended Old Dominion University’s Master’s in Education and completed her practicum teaching seventh grade Social Studies. It was during this time Ms. Knight discovered something life-changing. She was not gifted to teach children but found her passion teaching and training adults. Ms. Knight taught General Education Diploma (GED) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses at several non-profits. Ms. Knight has taught customer service, sales, insurance, financial services, air traffic control, human resources, labor and employee relations, and bible studies.
In 2007, Ms. Knight became a certified Professional of Human Resources (PHR) through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). In 2009, Ms. Knight moved into the federal sector and is now serving as a Labor Employee Relations Specialist with one of the largest agencies in the federal government. May 2015 Ms. Knight received her Master of Science degree in Human Resources. In June 2015 she received her SHRM-CP designation from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).
Ms. Knight is the author of Against Company Policy, a suspense novel featuring Human Resources Professionals. She is also the co-host of Authors Talk Live radio show on www.wpbnetwork.com on Sundays, 2-4pm. Ms. Knight is a sought after speaker, moderator, coach, and trainer. She is also a blogger and sought after radio show guest on various topics.
